Giving young people a voice in their local areas

Young people report that they want to be active in their local communities, but they feel there is a lack of facilities that they want, they cost too much or that they feel unwelcome to spend time in these spaces. As well as this they tell us there is too much traffic, there is too much rubbish and that sometimes they don’t feel safe.

We wanted to give young people a voice to make change to their local communities to overcome these barriers. We have developed ‘RPlace’; a mobile app where they can review their local areas to help empower young people and advocate for their wants and needs to help make changes to the places they live, play and go to school.

What is RPlace?

The app has been developed as a result of findings from HAPPEN and ACTIVE.  The reviews gathered by the RPlace App will be passed on to organisations (for example, the local council) to make places safer, more environmentally friendly and more accessible for children and teenagers. RPlace has been developed alongside Play Wales.

Using RPlace

Once you sign in, you will see the next screen containing the main menu where he will be able to choose between different buttons: “Add Place”, “Find Place”, “My reviews”, “My Added Places”, “Settings”, “About Us”.

After choosing the “Add Place” button, you will be taken to a screen where a full-size map screen will appear. Youwill then find the area which you can review, you should long press on it. Immediately after long pressing on the area to review, a pointer will appear, and a small screen will ask you to write the name of the area. Once this is done, you should return to the main button and click on the “Find Place” button to add a review.
