Fire Safety Schools Programme KS1
Project aim
Raise awareness on the dangers of touching matches and identify fire hazards in the home.
What does the project entail?
A story will be told of a cartoon character, Tanni, who found matches, lit one and its
consequences. The children will be encouraged to explore the actions of Tanni and decide
whether her / his actions are acceptable (Moral Issues PSE)
Matches rhyme will be taught to the children to reinforce the Fire Safety message (Safety)
Two children will be chosen by the teacher to dress up in a firefighter’s kit, the Community
Education Officer will link in the safety aspects of the kit with children’s safety clothing i.e.
importance of wearing helmets and when, importance of wearing high visibility clothing and
when. This links into People who helps us and Safety.
Community Education Officer will provide workbooks to the children after the lesson to
retain the message of “Don’t touch matches and tell a grown up”. The workbook has been
devised with the PSE curriculum and Literacy and Numeracy Framework.
What is required from the School?
Classroom or Hall Teacher to present at all times.
