6 - Dragon Multi-skills and Sport - Sport Wales
Project aim
The Active Young People (AYP) team are responsible for providing a variety of exciting sport
and physical activity opportunities for young people aged between 5 and 16 years, as part of
their school extra-curricular programmes and within their local communities. AYP Swansea
would like to see ‘every Child Hooked on Sport for Life’ and we have several projects to help
achieve this across the City.
What does the project entail?
A resource which follows on developmentally from Play to Learn. It is aimed at children in
the primary phase aged 7-11 years. The ethos of the multi-skills approach is for young
people to develop key physical skills that are applicable to and transferable across a range of
different sports. The Dragon Sport element of the resource then enables children to
transfer their basic physical skills into more sport specific activities.
What is required from the School?
-Arrange a meeting with the Active Young People team
-Attendance at the Dragon Multi Skills and Sport/Play to learn training sessions.
-Commitment to the physical literacy philosophy and improving the quality of extra-
curricular sport and physical activity
-Commitment to provide information on sport and physical activity within the school to the
AYP team, this information is valuable for future development of the programme and
identify best practice to share amongst schools.
How do the pupils directly benefit
-Taking part in lots of physical activities develops a child’s physical, cognitive, and social
skills, impacting positively on their health and wellbeing. These programmes can help make
a huge difference in starting them off and supporting them on their journey. Physical
Literacy is therefore as important as numeracy and literacy.
Physical skill + Confidence + Motivation + Lots of Opportunities = Physical Literacy
-Opportunity for pupils to attend Dragon Sport festivals
-Signpost pupils to local activities (School – club link) and ensure lifelong participation
