HAPPEN School Health Network
9 - Spectrum Project - Hafan Cymru
Project aim
Preventing Abuse, Promoting Healthy Relationships
We aim to:
-Facilitate schools to implement and embed a Whole School Approach to tackling Violence
against Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence (VAWDASV)
-Enable children, young people and the school community to recognise and avoid abusive
relationships
-Improve the school’s ability to identify and support at risk pupils
-Improve the school’s ability to manage situations post-identification
What does the project entail?
Spectrum is funded by Welsh Government and is therefore free to all schools across Wales.
It is a preventative, awareness raising educational project with over 12 years’ experience of
school delivery, underpinned by Hafan Cymru support services.
All School Liaison Officers (SLOs) are trained, qualified teachers with classroom based
experience.
All Spectrum staff have specialist knowledge in VAWDASV and Safeguarding.
Sessions are available to Foundation Phase, KS2, KS3 and KS4 pupils and training on a Whole
School Approach to Tackling VAWDASV is available to all school staff.
All Spectrum sessions link to PSE, Numeracy and Literacy Frameworks, documents such as
Sex and Relationships Education in Schools, Sexual Health and Wellbeing Action Plan for
Wales, the Curriculum Review - Successful Futures, safeguarding guidance and legislation
e.g. Keeping Learners Safe, Social Care and Well-Being Act etc.
Resources are age appropriate, bilingual & thematic and use a range of learning styles.
Delivery is consist across Wales – all SLOs follow the same lesson plans
All lessons contain subject specific key messages
Standards are monitored through evaluations carried out with both staff and pupils and a
database is maintained to provide statistics to both Welsh Government and key
stakeholders.
